This program is for professionals who already have practical experience conducting ISO 14044-compliant LCAs but want to become more confident applying that expertise to EPD development. You should have a workable LCA to use as the basis for your EPD project.
Start with the right foundation
This is practical, project-based training that builds on your existing LCA knowledge. It is designed to help you take the next step from conducting an LCA to developing an Environmental Product Declaration.
You must have practical experience conducting ISO 14044-compliant LCAs and a workable LCA that can serve as the basis for your EPD project.
The training builds on existing LCA expertise. It is not an introductory course in Life Cycle Assessment.

Why LCA Experience Alone Isn’t Enough for EPD Development
You may already be confident conducting an LCA. But developing an EPD means applying that knowledge within the relevant standards, Product Category Rules and programme operator requirements. The methodological choices, assumptions and data behind it must also be clearly documented and defensible during third-party verification.
In practice, this means making decisions about:
- Which PCR and programme operator requirements apply
- How to translate your LCA results into the required EPD structure
- How to handle data quality, allocation and modelling choices
- What needs to be documented, explained and justified
- What a verifier is likely to examine or challenge

The 10-week program combines a focused EPD foundation with guided work on your actual project.
Weeks 1–2: Understand the EPD Framework
Five modules cover:
- EPD fundamentals and purpose
- Standards, program operators and PCRs
- EPD requirements and interpretation
- Data and modelling considerations
- Multi-product EPDs
Weeks 3–10: Develop Your Own EPD
Apply the framework to your own EPD with guidance from experienced practitioners and a verifier.
- Work through real methodological and documentation decisions
- Bring your questions to eight live project-support sessions
- Learn what a verifier may examine or challenge
- Develop your EPD toward third-party verification
- Build a process you can apply to future EPD projects
It was the only training I found that really focused on the practical needs of an EPD practitioner. EPD Practitioner Training covered PCRs and the theory in depth, but also had a practical aspect where you could use what you learned and get feedback from the teachers. I think it’s a really good next step for an LCA practitioner. Now I feel more confident understanding the EPD framework and translating LCA information into EPDs.

Fabian is the LCA Lead at Eurovent Certification, where he works on LCA, EPD, PCR and standards development for the European HVAC&R manufacturing industry. He is also an EPD verifier for the IBU Program Operator and is involved in developing PCRs, supporting cPCR harmonisation, and establishing the Eurovent Certification Program Operator.
With a PhD in Environmental Engineering and Science and experience spanning LCA research, teaching, industrial LCA management and EPD development, Fabian brings together technical methodology, verification experience and practical insight into applying LCA and EPD requirements in manufacturing.

Matthias Schulz
Independent EPD Verifier · Founder, Schulz Sustainability Consulting
Matthias has nearly 20 years of LCA experience and has worked in EPD verification since 2012. He is an independent verifier appointed by the Advisory Board of Institut Bauen und Umwelt (IBU) and is also affiliated with the International EPD System.
Having participated in more than 500 EPD verifications, Matthias helps participants understand how verifiers assess plausibility, conformity, completeness and the transparency of methodological decisions.
