Q&A: DigitalProduct Passports -Environmental Databased on LCA and EPD

This is a summary of questions and answers from the Q&A section of

our Webinar on October 28th 2026.

Q: What is the importance and present mandate for LCAs in a DPP? I understand

that even a simple GHG is being accepted. If not mandatory at present, what is

the roadmap for LCA to be incumbent for a DPP?

A: There is no LCA requirement right now. The only explicit requirement is EPDs being

digitalised and built into DPPs, and that’s for construction products under the

Construction Products Regulation (CPR). Even so, LCA or EPD data will be useful input,

because DPPs will ask for PEF figures like CO2 and water use.

It’s too early to say if the data must be product-specific rather than a company-level

GHG number, but generally yes.

Each delegated act sets the level of detail: a unique item (batteries, for example), a

batch, or a model. The more detailed the level, the more work, and the more value you

get from it.

Q: What about few luxury brands who do not want to hear about DPP for second

market ?

A: In the luxury industry, compliance with DPP requirements offers a unique opportunity to

build sustainable circular value. Given the exceptional quality and longevity of luxury

goods, digital passports enable premium post-sale services—such as verifiable

authenticity, secondary market resale programs, official repair tracking, and spare parts

authentication.

When DPPs become mandatory for a certain industry, that will concern all brands in that

industry. The decision they need to make is whether they only do the bare minimum or

embrace DPP as an opportunity to share information about their products.

Q: Will DPP regulations also concern medicines?

A: No. Medicines already have their own data rules under a separate, similar regulation, so

they aren’t affected by DPP.

Q: EPD is a third party verified declaration. Is it same for DPP?

A: A DPP is not verified by a third party in general and at this stage, except where the CPR

applies (for EPDs). The 'economical operator' is responsible for the data and can be

fined if it’s wrong.

Q: Is Ecoplatform going to take action to collect addtional data for the DPP, and

extend the mandatory digitalization of EPDs to products other than

construction ones?

A: At this stage, mandatory EPDs certified by notified bodies apply specifically to the

Construction Products Regulation (CPR 2.0). Meanwhile, PEF (Product Environmental

Footprint) methodology is becoming the core framework used to calculate and report

life-cycle performance across other product regulations.

Q: Is it planned to aggregate some unique data when using a batch level and

being able to disaggregate for the sale of the unique product?

A: The coming Delegated Act (per product category) will specify the possible options.

Could you adress the SoC, effect on a Shift of the LCA boundaries? Substance of

concern.

When setting the system boundaries of an LCA, in the Goal and Scope phase, the

practitioner decides how much detail is feasible to include in the LCA. The idea is that all

materials and processes that have a significant influence on the environmental impacts

of the product should be included. The limit can be set, for example,. at 1% of total

impacts for selected environmental indicators, in addition to defining a threshold for

total mass or energy. As substances of concern do have significant environmental

impacts (or human health impacts), they should not be ignored if quantities are big

enough to have a significant impact.

Q: Will the database of the product data be managed and owned by the

manufacturer or by a third party company?

A: Whoever sells the product in the EU is responsible for the DPP and the data behind it. If

the data comes from suppliers, you have to request it from them, but the responsibility

stays with the EO (Economical operator) / seller.

DPPSP (DPP Service providers) will be able to perform some tasks under the EO

responsibility.

Q: One of our biggest challenges is obtaining accurate and relevant data from

industrial clients. There is often a gap between the technical data required for

LCA and EPD studies and the information companies are able to provide. Even

after multiple rounds of communication and clarification, the data we receive

is frequently incomplete or not aligned with our assessment requirements,

making the data collection process particularly time-consuming.

A: This is a common problem in LCA. Knowing how to ask for data and what to do when

data is missing or incomplete, is part of the practical skills you learn as a practitioner.

This is the area that is usually the most time consuming when conducting an LCA study.

It is also a topic we tend to discuss extensively during the practical LCA project phase of

our Hands-on LCA training program and EPD Practitioner program.

Regarding DPP, this task is equally time consuming. Nevertheless, DPP are coming with a

set of standards defined by JTC 24 / CEN CENELEC to facilitate the Data structure and

interoperability.

Q: How do the 70 data points for textile you mentioned compare to the data

required for Higg Index?

The Higg Index, you mention, is a voluntary, private B2B Life Cycle Assessment tool used

by brand ESG teams. The 70 DPP data points under ESPR represent a mandatory, multidimensional

digital product passport (covering traceability, components, origin,

repairability, and circular end-of-life data) for consumers, recyclers, and authorities. The

exact list of minimum required information will be specified in a delegated act /

hamonised norm.

Q: How can DPP move beyond secondary LCA data to capture real primary

environmental data from the supply chain?

Primary data from your own company or suppliers is always best, and background

databases fill the gaps.

Is it foreseen to have guidelines for LCA calculation within DPP?

The individual delegated acts will mostl likely define which LCA standards and Life Cycle

Impact Assessment methods should be applied for each product category

Q: Do you know the exact date of publication of the delegated act for DPP?

A: There will be separate delegated acts for each product category, and the planned timing

for those was shown in Ghislains presentation. Up to date information can be found on

the EU DPP foundation’s DPP Delecated Acts Tracker web page.

Q: How can we make DPP simple and low-cost for small suppliers in developing

countries so suppliers and buyers are truly aligned beyond just compliance?

A: This is an excellent question. We will need affordable education, software and database

access that are all good enough quality and scalable.

That’s a critical point: while the DPP will become mandatory regardless of company size,

the operational burden on smaller businesses could easily become a show-stopper.

Fortunately, implementation costs are expected to drop significantly with the adoption

of standardized frameworks (published this summer), the emergence of open source

solutions and the rise of new technologies like Data Spaces, which enable secure,

seamless data exchange. This is a prime example of emerging tech making DPP

adoption both accessible and cost-effective.

Q: If EPD is becoming a requirement, does this mean that a LCA study shoud be also

verified by a third-party?

For construction products under the CPR, yes. EPDs there still go through notified

bodies.

For the other categories under ESPR, there’s no direct PEF certification requirement (ie

no certified bodies that checks the data). You are still legally responsible for putting

accurate information in the DPP, and you can be fined if it’s wrong. The data must be

auditable and verifiable.

Q: Is the EPD requirement mandatory already for DPP?

A: Only for construction products, under the CPR. The CPR is moving EPDs from static

documents into dynamic, digital DPPs. PEF are required for other regulations like ESPR.

Q: How to hide inventory data of the company inside the DPP ?

A: Both in the case of an EPD and a critically reviewed LCA, not all LCI data needs to be

disclosed to the public. The verified however does need to see that data, usually under

an NDA.

Q: Is there a european database dedicated to centralize all the data coming from

foreign and EU market ? As for pharma

A: There is a EU registry where all DPP will need to be registered (already available in

test mode).

This registry will nevertheless only store the product ID and the datalink url. All the

related information is then stored by the responsible entity (EO) and should be

available for 10y in case of ESPR and 25y in case of CPR, after the product end of

production.

Q: How can I get in contact with the speakers?

We would love to connect with you after the webinar. Feel free to connect with our

speakers on LinkedIn: Ghislain Vathelot, Poul Lindqvist.

Q: How can I get started with doing LCA’s?

A: Environmental Impacts Academy has a Hands-on LCA training program that begins with

60 hours of academic level studies and then continues with an 8-week LCA project,

where you complete a real-life LCA for one of your company’s products, with the support

of our experts.

To qualify for the Hands-on LCA training program, you need to have at least a bachelor’s

level education, be fluent in english, have an LCA project to work on, and have the

budget to pay the course fee (usually companies pay for the LCA training of their

employees)
