Hedengren Security – Building In-House Expertise for EPDs
Company
Hedengren Security, part of the Hedengren Group in Finland, is a leading manufacturer of advanced security and emergency lighting systems. With over 200 products in its portfolio, the company is expanding its focus from reliable design to eco-design and sustainability, reflecting growing customer and regulatory expectations.
The Challenge: Meeting EPD Demands Across Multiple Product Lines
As customers increasingly requested Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Hedengren needed the ability to produce LCAs and EPDs in-house across multiple product lines.
The goal was to strengthen the R&D team’s capability so that sustainability data could be integrated directly into product development.
“We needed the ability to produce LCAs and EPDs in-house, and this training gave us exactly that. It was professional, practical, and well-supported throughout.”
Why Environmental Impacts Academy
Hedengren chose Environmental Impacts Academy for its professional, hands-on approach, competent instructors, and strong coordination. The Hands-On LCA Training Program combined a structured learning path, expert mentoring, and a dedicated EPD module, offering the depth and practicality required to turn training into measurable capability.
The Solution: Two Projects, One Goal—Building Internal Capability
Two participants joined the program: Marko Ronkainen from Hedengren Security and Juho Karppinen from another business unit within the group. The training commenced with 60 hours of structured academic learning, encompassing LCA fundamentals, ISO standards, and methodology. This solid foundation helped them understand how to structure and interpret environmental data effectively.
In the project phase, both participants completed full LCAs on their own products, an emergency light and an electric outlet pole, using Earthster software to model cradle-to-grave impacts in line with EPD requirements.
They collected supplier data, engaged with the R&D team, and received weekly coaching and feedback throughout the process. The additional EPD training module provided guidance on documentation and third-party review requirements, ensuring the results could be used to prepare future declarations.
“The training was professional and well-organised. There was always support available when needed, and we learned a lot of new things in a short time.”
Results: From Learning to Scalable LCA and EPD Expertise
By the end of the training, Hedengren had achieved what many manufacturers aim for: the ability to produce LCAs and EPDs independently. This shift marked a major step in embedding sustainability directly into product development and strengthening the company’s R&D capability.
With two trained specialists, practical project experience across different product units, and a clear process in place, Hedengren can now respond to customer requests for EPDs with confidence and consistency. The new internal expertise provides a solid foundation for expanding environmental reporting across the company’s 200+ SKUs and driving future eco-design initiatives.
“Probably one of the best ways to learn. It gave a general understanding of LCA and how to use it in real projects.”
